The Daintree Rainforest is undoubtedly one of the world’s natural wonders. Its complex tropical ecosystem is over 180 million years old, making it a registered UNESCO World Heritage site and a popular tourist destination. One of the best ways to experience the rainforest is by cruising along the Daintree River. Snaking through the heart of the area, the densely populated mangrove estuary is home to an abundance of wildlife. Most visitors arrive with the hopes of seeing a dazzling array of tropical creatures, though one animal in particular seems to catch everyone’s eye, the Estuarine Crocodile!
The largest of all living reptiles and an iconic Australian animal, saltwater crocodiles are hypercarnivorous apex predators. Throughout the day they appear deceptively docile but these opportunistic hunters will react with impressive agility when there’s prey around.
Here at the Daintree River Cruise Centre, we aim to showcase all aspects of this incredible environment. From these ancient reptilian predators, to flocks of birds, schools of fish, sneaky snakes and a variety of the mangrove species lining the riverbank. All aspects of this ecosystem play an important role and are equally interesting. We encourage you to come aboard, ask as many questions as possible and let our guides show you the ultimate wildlife experience on the Daintree River.
The Daintree River Cruise Centre has four boats; MV Matilda I, MV Matilda II, MV Matilda III and The Golden Dolphin. They were designed by founder Lee Lafferty and Doctor Walter Stark to be ideally suited for eco-cruising in the waters of this unique river. Powered by low emission, fuel efficient Yamaha four-stroke outboards, these boats are able to get you up close and personal with all sorts of stunning wildlife.
They each have an overhead canopy and tiered, open-air seating to ensure excellent all-round viewing whilst also protecting our guests from varying weather conditions. They also have a shallow draft which minimizes any wake to the shoreline, makes them incredibly stable (ensuring you won't get seasick) and results in being able to cruise in blissful serenity.
